Let's dance

Good times

What was Stephen Colbert thinking? This is more like it. Comedian Brad Sherwood pulls Karl Rove out of the audience at the White House Radio-TV Correspondents Dinner to join him for a "rap" song. He asks Rove a few innocuous questions ("Do you have any hobbies?") and then performs an improvised rap based on Rove's (mostly jokey) responses. Rove's job during the song is to occasionally shout "I'm M.C. Rove" in the hip-hop manner. He is also encouraged to dance. A few other attendees (including NBC's David Gregory) are also brought on stage to be "backup dancers." That's it. That's the routine. No satirical content whatsoever. Unless you consider encouraging middle-aged establishment types in suits to act like rappers to be satirical.

This is presumably a routine that Sherwood performs at conventions and corporate events across America. He brings up Ted Henderson, regional manager of Bank of America's Decatur branch, asks him a few questions and then improvises a rap that references Ted's hobbies, favorite movies, etc. The audience of fellow Bank of America employees goes nuts. Because Ted Henderson is up on stage! And he's saying "I'm MC Ted" in a funny rap voice! And he's busting rap moves! In his shirt and tie! And look! There's Market Risk Analyst Mary Lynn Dunlap, Human Resources Manager Phil Borelli and VP-Finance Richard J. Garner getting down behind him! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Why would a comedian at the White House Radio-TV Correspondents Dinner at the height of the Bush Administration's latest scandal bring Karl Rove on stage and not make the slightest reference to who the man actually is? Because that might make people uncomfortable! And we don't want that! Remember the awkward silences during Colbert's act last year? Mainstream journalists don't want to see Karl Rove in the hot seat! Take it away, Time Magazine Managing Editor Richard Stengel:
"I am so uninterested in the Democrats wanting Karl Rove because it is so bad for them."
Tell it, baby! Karl Rove exposed turning the Justice Department into his own personal dirty tricks operation is bad...for the Democrats! And Congressional oversight is sooooo uninteresting! YAAAAWWWN!

Look! Karl's dancing! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Did you see James Wolcott's column in the recent Vanity Fair Hollywood issue about the 50th anniversary of Elia Kazan's A Face in the Crowd? Wolcott noted that it's no longer the public who eats out of the hand of evil, charming bumpkins, but rather the D.C. press corps.

I can almost see the tears of desperation as you typed that. It would be funny, if it wasnt so serious.

Did you catch this article on IMDB?

CBS News's Baghdad correspondent has expressed frustration over how the television networks -- presumably his own, in particular -- currently cover the war in Iraq. In an article posted on the CBSNews.com website under the heading, "Covering Iraq: Trying to Connect," Correspondent Allen Pizzey writes that while the networks devoted much attention last week to 12 pets who were killed by tainted dog and cat food, the deaths of 12 human beings in Iraq would have gone unreported. "How 12 dead animals in a country the size of the U.S. rates with the sliding scale of mayhem here is what I'm finding hard to gauge," Pizzey wrote. "When only 12 human bodies are found on any given morning in Baghdad with marks of the kind of torture the ASPCA would quite rightly have a pet owner in court for, it is judged as 'progress' for the security plan."

I remember after 9/11 a piece on the animals that were hurt in the collapses, but this is taking it a bit far.

I'm surprised the white house press corps and administration officials consort so cordially, considering the (presumably) adversarial relationship. Perhaps, the invitation to attend came with ground rules about what sorts of behavior would be permitted.

You could write a book about how non-adversarial the press has been under Bush.

Yeah, the 24 hours news cycle already reduced the need for on-the-scene White House journalists. With the White House getting better and better at managing the message, a White House journalist's job has been reduced to going through the motions and playing nice with the White House staff, so they at least get tapped to ask a prearranged question occasionally.

To the people doing it, sure. To a lot of the people watching it, probably. It pains me to consider this, but the fact is that even a lot of TV is now classy enough to have dropped the white-guy-acting-"black" "joke". Classier than those guys.

Holy Crap, for being so brilliant Rove sure comes off as a dumb ass. (He is wily so it's prolly intentional)
Brad Sherwood's rap probably contained nothing of substance because it's hard to rhyme things with adulterer, dirty tricks, college dropout, Alberto Gonzales, congressional hearings or tiny penis.

This wasn't the White House Correspondents Dinner, but the Radio-Television Correspondents Dinner. The actual WHCD is being held on the 21 of April and promises to be executed with minimal controversy (no dancing, no laughter, no breathing).

Anyway...
