Howard Fineman never retreats, he just attacks in the opposite direction.

1337

Did Howard Fineman say tonight on MSNBC that Mike Huckabee could attract the youth vote because "young people" who read the "Chuck Norris websites" see Chuck Norris on the platform with Huckabee and therefore think Huckabee is "cool"? I'm afraid he did. I wish I'd been taping it.

Now I'm no more a young person than Howard Fineman is but my understanding is that not only is the Chuck Norris Facts thing not generation-specific but the whole thing is arguably predicated on Chuck Norris's colossal goofiness. One might even say his uncoolness. It is also my understanding that "young people" as a rule are not idiots. I invite any young people in my audience to clear this up.

(P.S.: Many before me have taken issue with the man's grasp of everything.)

Ah, but unlike you and me, Howard Fineman and Chuck Norris are "down with" the youth of today. They like to "rap" with the "kidz" and find out who is "phat" and "illin'."

Mitt Romney won the Republican straw vote. Huckabee won the caucus. And if you spell "Chuck Norris" in Scrabble, you win. Forever.

Well, obviously Chuck Norris doesn't have the same kid-appeal as James Wolcott, but politicians must take their cool where they can get it.

Personally, I look forward to an Obama-Huckabee race. Oh boy, wouldn't that be fun.

the chuck norris joke thing was sort of an outgrowth of the general fascination with ninjas.

like most internet phenomena, chuck norris jokes were no longer funny long before 95% of people who heard them at all heard them, and only remain funny for maybe 2% of that 95%. indeed, the only reason to make a chuck norris joke now is to do so ironically. ...or to let all your friends know that you just picked up on something they forget about a couple years ago.

in other news, TNT (which runs x-files all night every monday) seems to have made it through the dismal last season and begun running season 1 once again. not remotely related to this post or even my response to it, yes, but agent scully is the perfect woman.

I love how people speak for my age group without really knowing anything about it. Most of the people I know who like the Chuck Norris jokes only like it because it's parodying Chuck Norris, not because they're in love with Chuck Norris.

If Chuck Norris worshiped Satan, that doesn't mean all the kids are going to start bathing in blood and summoning demons, it just means Chuck Norris worships Satan. Norris admittedly doesn't understand his popularity on the internet and thinks people believe the "Facts" are true, so this looks like a train wreck of a bandwagon that they tried to create.

I'm 22, and I can assure you that these people have no clue what they're talking about. In fact, it's just the opposite. Any remaining "cool" factor those Chuck Norris Facts retained has since been thoroughly drained by his endorsement of the craziest man in a party full of lunatics. If they're endorsing a Republican at all, the "young people" seem to be creaming themselves over Ron Paul, who is only the second craziest. Or is he third? Anyway, most of the kids these days are cheering for Obama, even though Kucinich is most in line with what they actually want. The same holds true of most Paul supporters. As for me, I'd love to see Dennis in charge, but that's not going to happen, sadly. I'm on the fence between Edwards and Obama, leaning towards Edwards. I'll take either of them over Clinton any day.

Hmm...
Chuck Norris facts are an amusing way to waste time at work, but for the most part, it's more of a 'gag'.

He's got a bitchin beard though.

Huckabee should grow a beard. Hell, I want a president with facial hair! I think Taft was the last president, and he had a walrus 'stache. tres magnifique (or however you spell it in frawnsh)

I'm actually embarrassed that Chuck Norris is backing Huckabee... the man is a bible thumper who wants to portray a Christian America.

Vote Barack. Muslim president FTW (in this climate anyway)

I'm 24, and I have to agree with everyone here that the Chuck Norris jokes are way past their prime, and are only amusing to some people (i.e. me, occasionally) because I tend to like things way after they should be funny. And oddly enough, not WHILE they're funny. Maybe it's the irony I like. I freely admit that the Chuck Norris thing is overdone, so I only use it around real life friends, and never online, where I'd get my ass handed to me for such a thing.

If Chuck Norris doesn't realize he's a joke, I feel a bit sorry for him. I don't think anyone REALLY thinks Chuck Norris is cool. From all accounts, he's kind of a pussy. (An older friend of mine worked at a doctor's office in California once and had to give him a shot; she says he FREAKED OUT and might have even been crying.)

Anyway, if any candidate or pundit or whatever honestly thinks young people are stupid enough to associate someone with Chuck Norris as being "as cool as" Chuck Norris, then they might be right - But those doofus young people are probably not going to be smart enough to vote on election day. They'll be too busy buying tight pants and putting product in their hair. (I'm talking about the boys, here.)

I am a 22 year old gamer... so I am pretty sure that I am part of the "young" people he's talking about here.

The Chuck Norris thing started, I believe when Conan O'Brien added the "Walker Lever" to his show. Every time he pulled the lever, they'd play a random scene from Walker Texas Ranger... and obviously it was all founded on his absurd egotistical dialogue.

To answer the question: No. I think I'd be LESS likely to vote for someone Chuck Norris endorsed.

I'm 25... Young people are know it alls, it has nothing to do with making sense and everything to do with saturation. Chuck has saturated, young people -will- grab this and run with it, the masses can be influenced by something as dumb as celebrity worship, in fact thats pretty much what our elections turn out to be anyways except for the few people who actually are informed about politics. Can you really say the average 18 year old has it on the ball enough to understand what financial and cultural decisions will affect him/her for the next 4 years to come...?

Being a young person, I can accurately say that we are, generally speaking, colossal morons. Our only saving grace is that every graduating class following ours seems to get more and more dumblier. So when we're in charge, we'll look like patronizing intellectuals by comparison.

Nevertheless, I don't think even we're dumb enough to vote in Huckabee.

I'm 25 which makes me a borderline young person, given that I've yet to finish college or do anything but smoke pot and write blogs for the last seven years...

To the point, however. I would say that young people do enjoy the chuck norris facts more than older folks who might enjoy Walker Texas Ranger reruns more.

But just because Huckabee removed the crucifix from the background and replaced it with Chuck Norris(who looks like the type of guy you'd find hanging around on a crucifix) doesn't mean I've got any more love for him.

So go Ron Paul, and if not then I guess Obama is my man.
