Die James Urbaniak Show!
I have a few days off. It snowed a couple of days ago which slows things down. The city has a huge deficit and they don't spend money on clearing the streets. It is pretty though. My wife and I walked around today. Went to an English language bookstore and bought a biography of Peter Cook and Jon Dos Passos's novel "Manhattan Transfer." I definitely am going to need some more reading material while I'm here since the only English language television on cable is CNN International, which basically just repeats the same business news every half hour. Not that I haven't enjoyed watching German TV. Last night I watched "The Kurt Krömer Show," a talk show hosted by a comedian apparenty named Kurt Krömer. He's a lanky, bespectacled 30-ish guy whose on-air persona is similar to Conan's nerd-bravado shtick, but played much broader. And his set is straight out of "Pee-Wee's Playhouse," a candy-colored representation of a suburban porch, with white plastic lawn chairs and a mailbox that reads "Krömer." His band is a campy three-person combo called Mini Beat and between sequences their energetic frontwoman sings "Die Kurt Krömer Show, Kurt Krömer Show, Kurt Krömer Show!" His guests last night were some guy who I think was an actor, a comedian who did a robot mime routine and a journalist. I understood maybe a dozen words.

I also watched dubbed episodes of "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" (which here is inexplicably titled "Law and Order: New York;" what do they call the other "Law and Orders?") and "The Simpsons." The German Bart, Lisa and, believe it or not, Moe, all sound remarkably like the originals, enough to make you wonder if Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith and Hank Azaria speak fluent German. Homer and Marge, however, sound completely different. Homer has a high scratchy voice that sounds kind of like Henchman 21 from "The Venture Brothers" (or is it 24? I don't remember. Anyway, I mean the one who doesn't sound like Ray Romano.) Marge sounds to my ear (and obviously I am wholly ignorant of German dialects) dignified and matronly. And don't even get me started on Nelson. Then late last night I watched an old German musical comedy, apparently from the early thirties about a beautiful woman and her various suitors, who included a comic relief duo with an Odenkirk and Cross vibe (tall and drab-looking and short and bespectacled). These guys were actually very funny. I wonder who they were.

Well, mein Anklets, thanks for reading. I'll keep you posted.

If Law and Order and the Simpsons are the main American television exports to Germany, they must have an interesting idea of what the US is like. And I don't know if they'd be all that off base, sometimes. We're murderously wacky!

What about Nelson? What? What? You can't just bring that up and then leave us hanging. I'm going to die from curiosity!

I like to imagine the German Nelson just walks around saying "shadenfraude!"

(The first alternative my online dictionary gave me when I entered "shadenfraude" was "chowderhead". Which reminds me, I like to imagine the German Mayor Quimby walking around and talking about donuts all the time. I wonder if Mayor Quimby and Dr. Girlfriend have a history...)

Yes, in his "ha-ha" cadence.

The German Nelson is voiced by a man so he sounds inappropriately adult, unlike Nancy Cartwright's child thug voice.

ha, ha, Josh Emery.
Fictional though you may be, your sentiment, (no doubt meant to be taken in literal English), rings true in the German sense. Wouldn't we all like to be guests on "Die James Urbaniak Show"? I know I would. In fact, I think I would demand to be the Andy Richter sidekick (but cuter). I'll write the lyrics, too. Ready?

Sounds like fun, especially if there's bad dubbing involved.

Did you watch any German movies? Do they have their own made for TV movies? What horribly touristy (is that even a word?) things did you end up doing?

and to you're Henchmen # question. You're thinking of #21. Bad Urbaniak, Bad!!!

German TV seems to show a lot of bad and/or obscure American films. The other night they were showing "King Ralph."

Oh, and last night they showed two Jerry Lewis movies back to back ("The Errand Boy" and "The Bellboy," which are, of course, an exception to my above comment; they are neither bad nor obscure). And I must say, the German guy who does Jerry Lewis's voice is excellent. Seriously, he has his pitch, timing and inflections down perfectly. As opposed to the German John Wayne, who sounds nothing like the Duke. Or the German Sean Connery. The German DeNiro is okay.

Practically a whole post about The Simpsons in German...

You're my hero, Mr. Urbaniak.

I cannot wait for, "Fay Grim."

I hope I can find an actual theater to see it in.

Probably have to drive to bloody Seattle.

As I live in a cultural vacuum...

And those folks at [adult swim] really need to put the first season of Venture Brothers out on DVD.

Because watching, "streaming," video on the website on Friday nights with the sound off four minutes from the jumpy picture isn't working for me.

I was. But, not being an avid Everybody Loves Raymond viewer, I was working off of my memory of his voice from his Dr. Katz appearances. Since then, of course, 24 has developed some of his own vocal tics, while still retaining a bit of the Ray.

By the way, Hi James!

When I was in Germany a few years ago, I saw a bit of an episode of ALF where the alien sounded stuffy like a professor. When visiting France in 2001, I turned on the TV and they were airing Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but it was the one episode where no one could talk, so it was perfect to watch in a foreign language.

Entertainment Weekly has commented on the show saying "NBC's taken a cue from 24 on this pilot..."

It then mentions some cast members (sadly, they did not mention any accountant-like assassin played by one Mr. James Urbaniak) also has a short plot overview about how the show will show all facets of the investigation.

Remember folks, great things come from Entertainment Weekly mentions, really great things.
