Movie News

Went to a cast & crew screening of "Fay Grim" last night and it is, I am happy to report, quite fantastic. A wonderful companion piece to "Henry Fool" and Hal Hartley at the top of his game. Funny, emotional and resonant. And I say that not just because I'm in it.

My other Toronto International Film Festival movie, Gabriel Range's "D.O.A.P." (aka "Death of a President"), is beginning to generate talk even without anyone having seen it yet (including me). Yesterday, the greatest substance-abusing American film critic since James Agee weighed in.

So what are the odds of a Simon Grim movie, and if those are high, will we see it before another decade is up?

There was a Simon Grim movie and it was called "Henry Fool." If there's a trilogy (and I think there will be), the third installment will probably focus on Henry and Fay's son Ned.

Well, I did use cite tags. I'm not a retard. I remember being vaguely surprised that Henry Fool wasn't really about him.

I've been meaning to ask -- was the ending of Henry Fool intentionally ambiguous? I've always thought it was, but I've seem some people not take it that way.

Definitely looking forward to to Fay Grim.

The line is "I am not retarded."

The script for "Henry Fool" ended with the stage direction "Henry runs toward the plane." When Hal showed the first cut of the film to people, they asked if he was running to or from the plane. It hadn't occurred to Hal that it could be interpreted that Henry was running from the plane, but when he looked at the way he had cut it he saw how it could be seen that way. He liked the (originally unintentional) ambiguity so he left it that way. "Fay Grim," incidentally, plays with the was-he-or-wasn't-he-getting-on-the-plane question.

Curses. I screwed up. I guess I am, after all.

Thanks for the scoop on the ending.

Whoa... You're IN the "they assassinated the president" movie?

Yup. My highest profile work since the Bud "Wuzzup" commercials.

Wow. With the infamy it has already accrued, I must doff my cap to you on your good fortune in choosing this project.

I'm waiting to actually see it before I bother listening to any of the hype.

Yesterday, the greatest substance-abusing American film critic since James Agee weighed in.

At first I thought you were talking about this guy and I thought, "Wow, that's mean."

But you weren't.

Why would I be mean to Harry Knowles?

September 2 2006, 03:47:48 UTC 5 years ago

Well, you wouldn't. But saying he has a substance-abuse problem, that would be mean.

Ok, first (unneeded and unnecessary) tip on "How to be Cool in Toronto during the Festival":

Hang out in Yorkville. Specifically "Sassafraz". That place is teaming with glitterati!

I'm not going but thank you anyway. Work and family obligations.

SAD.

Well, you are a Daddy now, after all. Sacrifices must be made! ('cept when my father did it, it was the other way around... Home life for career, you see. Awww, now I've gotten all weepy and nostalgic. SPEND LOTS OF TIME WITH YOUR KIDS, JAMES! DO IT FOR THE LITTLE GIRL I ONCE WAS! PAPPA, CAN YOU HEAR ME?!)

I've heard of Death of a President just today and it does sound like an interesting film. I'm kinda wondering how it plays out.

Oh, BTW, Lee Siegel just got suspended from The New Republic. He also got caught using a sockpuppet to help defend himself.

Wow!

New post up about good ol' Lee. Thanks for the info!

Holy shit, you're in the assassination movie?! People everywhere are flipping out about this thing.

I know Toronto and Channel 4 have got it covered, but I wonder if it'll ever come to the States...

I cannot wait to see Simon Grim. Henry Fool had a huge impact on me when I saw it. Ever since my life has been filled with composition notebooks. Congrats my friend.

Oh....Rush

What really makes me see red about Rush's rant is how he fails to tell his listeners that the film comes from the UK -- but then, that would prevent him from attacking the DNC, MoveOn, etc.

Fay Grim

Hey, James. Henry Fool is one of my all-time favorite movies, if not my all-time favorite movie. I cannot wait to see Fay Grim. The fact that the film exists is making me dizzy with anticipation.

Keep up the fantastic work.
