You know how the Germans have a word for shameful joy... schadenfreude? I wonder if they have some word for that cringing sensation of being utterly embarrassed for someone. Because I'm feeling it.

the great irony is that "conservatives" are such an extreme joke, yet the joke isn't funny at all. "leftist cultural imperialism"? "defense of internment"? calling people in opposing parties 'faggots'? it's such a farce, but not even worth a chuckle.

The great irony is that the extremes on both sides are doing the same thing, just using different lingo to make the other look more like the bad guys while bringing the whole down.

If it's a joke, I've yet to see the humor in it.

The CPAC buisiness also floated the odd Matt Sanchez sideshow - don't think there's anything NSWF on that page, but the gist is that one of the recent minor celebs of the right who scored a photo op with Coulter turned out to be a former gay pornstar/escort.

Not precisely Jeff Gannon II: Electric Boogaloo, but pretty darn odd - not as odd and significantly more harmless than this fellow, but one sort of has to wonder if Mr Sanchez was a little hazy on things like campaign platforms and the like. It just seems like a weird place for a former gay pornstar to hang out. I mean Mary Carey's political dallying seemed to be more about publicity than anything else, but this just seems like something that could only end in awkwardness.

Well, I'm a conservative myself, but I must say that a lot of the folks in this video embarrassed themselves. Ms. Coulter is the most-high profile example, but then I've never cared for her, inasmuch as she's built a career out of making outrageous comments. She's as bad as any shock-jock, and actually a great deal worse- she's exhibit A of the schoolyard immaturity that's blighting our public dialogue today. Nothing will get done until the political class graduates from middle school, stops calling names and talks about issues, but I'm especially disappointed in people like her. She makes it seem "okay" for a prominent politico to toss out senseless epitaphs.

Heck, the "fa" word was a standard locker-room insult of those folks I considered, hm, well lets say the people I did not hold in high regard back in high school. If they're leading the conservative movement, people like me are in big trouble. Well, actually, everyone is.

But then again, I must note that I don't hold the Michael Moore jump-up-and-stick-a-camera-in-your-face-without-warning school of political commentary in very high esteem either. They’re pretty-much one off pot-shots intended to elicit a knee-jerk reaction. For example, those Tancredo supporters pretty much did as they were supposed to. Now, I’ve never heard of this Michelle Malkin, and if she really does believe that Arab-American should be interned I deplore it, but she did seem to catch this fellow off-guard by actually addressing him. It sort of took the wind out of his sails: “You made a lot of mistakes… that was, that was a good speech Malkin…” These people are much more comfortable if you blow up at them than if you actually talk to them. And Ms. Malkin IS right about one thing: a frank exchange of opinions is a lot more constructive than whatever the proper phrase for this genre is.

Do you know Michelle? Cos you know she really isn't like her writing in person. She's really sweet, compassionate too.

I'm sure you know what your doing, but for me I'd think twice 'fore making fun of a fellow creator. But that seems to be your mode this week.

Oh, btw, it looks like the discovery channel thing isn't going to work after all. I sent my friend some links to your stuff but she's going with Pierce Brosnan instead. Sorry if i got yer hopes up.

I didn't say anything about Michelle Malkin, I just linked a video someone else made that she appears in. But for the record I think she's is talentless right-wing hack who traffics in half-truths, innuendo and sensationalism.

Pierce Brosnan beat me out for James Bond as well. Story of my life.

This style of reportage, as in going into the lions den with a camera and doing such questions yields surprisingly good results, but I can't help involuntarily cringing at points for the interviewer as his words come out to say something you KNOW the other side is going to get pissed at and take shots back at. I couldn't take it myself, not the right person for it. I guess you really have to have the right kind of constitution for that. (rim shot!)

I don't know how I felt about the author at the beginning. I'm torn, I guess. She's obviously crazy, but, on the whole, I don't like ambushing... Then again, I'm a debater at heart, and I think everyone should get the chance to prepare an argument. Even crazy politicos.
Maybe I'm too kind....

She knows a thing or two about ambushing herself. Last year on her website she posted the private phone numbers of the members of student group whose politics she disagreed with. Keep in mind this was not the behavior of a fringe figure; she is a high-profile pundit with a syndicated column who appears regularly on Fox News and other programs.

Im with a lot of you, in that ambush journalism actually makes me feel sympathetic towards the subject. If its Anne Coulter then as soon as she speaks it goes, but I do feel ambushing them is a little distasteful. It would be more effective if you just filmed their views in public. A bit like Charlton Heston in Bowling for Columbine; he was a lot more demonised when they just showed the footage of his rally outside that school. When Moore duped him in his own home I felt a bit sorry him.

OMG... wait... I know my friend saw Ann Coulter and here's a quote from that post:

"We stood and turned our backs (an action that Ann Coulter rebuttaled by saying something along the lines, "In case you were wondering, standing makes your butt look really big. Can we get some wide load signs over here"

Man, she's really vain, if not mildly insane.

So does anyone really know what Anne Coulter does? I mean, I get it, she's a hard-line "conservative" and author, but that doesn't really explain anything as to why she is some sort of talking head.

Sincerely,

Her "job" is to make insecure conservatives feel like big men by attacking the masculinity of non-conservative men, attacking 9/11 widows, demonizing gays, praising domestic terrorists, etc. Basically she's a hate-whore. So why is she always on TV? That's easy: conservatives see that liberals don't like her, and conclude that she must therefore be funny and insightful. It's no coincidence that she's always on Fox News.

As for Malkin, the Kelly to Coulter's Barbie, she's not quite as mean-spirited as Ann, but she's just as totally out of her mind. There's no need to ambush either of them - they're perfectly capable of ambushing themselves. Just look at Annie's "macaca moment" at the CPAC.

Neither of them are quite as noxious as Michael Weiner (you know him as "Savage"), but Coulter sometimes comes close. Weiner is, mercifully, confined to radio. And his hatred is targeted pretty consistently at gays, whereas Coulter has enough hatred for everyone.
